These pages are where our members display the names and locations of the families
they are researching.
Members' ancestors mostly lived in Glasgow, or in the old counties of Argyllshire,
Ayrshire, Bute, Dunbartonshire, Lanarkshire, Renfrewshire or the western end of
Stirlingshire. (See Map). Many members had earlier
ancestors who came to our area from elsewhere, most usually from the Scottish Highlands,
the Scottish Borders or Ireland. Many of them had family who subsequently left the
area to settle in other parts of the English speaking world. Some family members
even went beyond that.
If you are a visitor who has family interests in any of the above areas, you can
use the search facilities above to see if anyone in our Society is researching your
family.
You can also search for a name by entering it in the box above. You can enter any
part of the name to widen your search or if you are unsure of the complete spelling.
If you find a name or a member that interests you, click on the members name to
go to the relevant member's page. There you will find a link which you can use to
send further enquiries.
Members wishing to subscribe to the directory should visit the
member's instructions page. Members
who subscribe to the Society's paper-based Members' Interests Directory must apply
separately to have their research interests included in OMID. This ensures the Society
can meet its obligations under the UK Data Protection Act.
Ordnance Survey Maps
The ‘Ordnance Survey One-inch 2nd edition, Scotland, 1898-1904 with parishes shown
in colour’ maps are very useful for locating the parishes you are researching. The
Glasgow & West of Scotland Family History Society have produced a list of all
the parishes in our area showing the sheet number(s) on which each parish appears.
The complete index can be found
here. An index to these maps, and the
starting point for accessing the individual sheets online, can be found
here.
